IAEE > CEM > CEM Exam Process

As of 1 January 2009, you will have 90 days from the last day of the course in which to request, complete and pass the corresponding exam toward CEM designation credit. All courses taken prior to 1 January 2009 will continue with the one (1) year requirement.

Please Note:
There is an annual hold on all Exam Request forms 13 November 2010 - 4 January 2011 (Last day to test in 2010 is 19 November 2010)

Utilizing the online format, you will be able to:

  • Order exams faster without having to pay for special shipping!
  • Receive an Exam Request Confirmation!
  • Receive your Results Letter Instantly!

To take the exam in an individual test setting, your proctor will need a computer with:

  • Reliable internet access.
  • Print capabilities.
  • Power source or battery life of at least one hour (if using a laptop).

**WHEN SELECTING A PROCTOR IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO INFORM THEM OF THE NEW ONLINE FORMAT AND WHAT THEY ARE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE.**

To take the exam in a class setting, you will need to provied a computer with:

  • Battery life of at least one hour - YOU WILL NOT BE GIVEN A POWERSOURCE ONSITE
  • Wireless capabilities - We will provide free wi-fi if testing on-site, but your laptop will need to have wireless capabilties in order to access the venue's wi-fi.

***If you are unable to provide either or both of these, then you will not be able to take the exam on-site and must request the exam at a later time (within 90 days of the course).***

IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS OR QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR LAPTOP CAPABILTIES, PLEASE TALK TO YOUR IT PERSON BEFORE ARRIVING ONSITE.

How to Request an Exam to be INDIVIDUALLY Proctored:

Step One: Complete the CEM Course.
You can only register for an exam after you have completed the corresponding CEM Learning Program Course.

Step Two: Find a Proctor.

You can approach any CEM that you know, your HR Director, or contact any of the CEMs listed on the downloadable Proctor List (PDF) which is sorted by country, state, and city. Make sure to inform your proctor of the format in which you will be taking your test (online or paper/pencil) & what they will need to provide.

Step Three:
Decide on a Location, Date, & Time that works for both of you.

Please note: this is an important step because any change in date or proctor will delay your exam date by up to 5 business days.

Step Four:
Fill out & Submit the Exam Request Form.
Use the online electronic exam request form for all online exams or fax in/email the downloadable exam request form for all paper/pencil exams & retests. Please arrange your exam to be taken 5 business days after your online request.

Step Five:
Show up prepared and at least 15 minutes early for the exam.
Come ready to take the exam. Be sure to bring 2 pencils/pens if you are taking the paper/pencil exam. If you are taking the online exam, then you will need to have tried out your login combination PRIOR to the exam day, reviewed the exam instructions, reviewed the Online Exam PowerPoint Tutorial, and taken the Demo Exam.

Testing On-site at the End of a Course:

Step One: RSVP
Watch for the email requesting that you RSVP for the exam. You MUST RSVP by the due date noted in the email in order to be eligible to take the on-site exam. I would HIGHLY suggest registering by the date listed online for the module mailing (usually approximately one month prior to the course date) in order to make sure that you get all pre-course emails. If you register too late, you will not be eligible to take the exam.

Step Two: Come Prepared.
Study your module, review the material and any notes. You will need to check both your wireless card & battery life PRIOR to arriving on-site. This will be even more important if you are borrowing a laptop. Talk to your IT person about any special firewall issues if it is a work laptop. Test your log-in combination, review the exam instruction, review the Online Exam PowerPoint Tutorial, and take the Demo Exam PRIOR to arriving on-site.

For Online Testing

To register for the exam, you will need to find a proctor and to fill out the Exam Request Form (be careful to only select ONE COURSE TITLE -- if you took a course in 2009, you will select the course title from the 2009 drop down menu. If you took the course in 2010, then you will need to select the NEW course title from the 2010 drop down menu on the form). Please arrange your exam to be taken 5 business days after your online request. All fields must be completed. Once this request is received by the IAEE Education Department, the exam instructions will be emailed directly to the proctor one day prior to the exam. The examinee will receive an email one day prior with login information. If you do not receive this email by 5pm CST on the day prior to the exam, please check your SPAM/JUNK MAIL folder or contact me at: cem@iaee.com**THIS ELECTRONIC FORM CANNOT BE USED FOR RE-TAKES. YOU MUST USE THE DOWNLOADABLE RETAKE FORM LOCATED AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE.**

Once the informational email (to be received one day prior) arrives, the examinee will have access to a demo practice exam. This exam is NOT course specific but will allow you to practice moving forward and backward in the exam as well as submitting your response. Click here for a Online Exam Tutorial Power Point. Click here for a few Quick Tips about testing.

Once received, the exam must be taken on the date requested. If an issue arises and the exam cannot be taken on the date scheduled, it is the examinee's responsibility to contact IAEE at +1 (972) 687-9224 or by email at cem@iaee.com immediately in order to set up a new exam date as exam passwords are only good for the day scheduled for the exam. Exam date changes require at least 2 business days notice. A change in proctor requires a new exam request submission.

All CEM exams are administered in person, whether at the conclusion of an on-location course, during a designated testing time with an IAEE Meeting or through a proctor in the candidate's local area. You will travel to your proctor's office (or a location decided on by the two of you) and take the exam on their computer (hence the requirements above).

Finding a Proctor

The program requires that a current CEM serve as the local testing proctor for your exam. Click here for a list of proctors sorted by area. Please Note: If you decide to contact someone as a proctor, you are expected to travel to wherever is most convenient for them and you may have to contact more than one in order to work out a convenient time.

If you do not know a CEM in your area and cannot make arrangements with a local proctor from the list, you are able to have your Human Resources Director proctor your exam. The only stipulation with this option is that the person MUST be someone that you do not directly report to and he/she does not directly report to you. Another option is to make arrangements to sit for the exam at a local library with their on-site proctor. Finally, you can also have your exam proctored at any CEM Learning Program in 2009 (including CEM at Expo!Expo!). You can find a list of our upcoming courses and their locations at www.iaee.com/cem/course_schedule.

Re-Take a CEM Exam

Each CEM Candidate is allowed one (1) exam re-take per CEM course within one (1) year following the date of the registered CEM course.

The fee to re-take a CEM Exam is $25.00.

A CEM Exam Re-take Registration form must be completed by the candidate and submitted to the IAEE Education Department. If the re-take exam is not passed, it is a CEM Learning Program requirement that the candidate register for the course a second time, attend and pass the required exam in order to proceed in working towards the CEM designation.  To download an Exam Re-take Registration Form click here

Paper/Pencil Testing -- Applies only to RETAKES

All New CEM Course Exams (2010 courses and moving forward) are now online and do not have this option - only retakes from courses taken in 2009 will be offered in this format.

All CEM exams are administered in person during a designated testing time with an IAEE Meeting or through a proctor in the candidate's local area.

Once this retake request form (link located above) is received by the IAEE Education Department, the exam will be mailed directly to the proctor, complete with testing instructions, within 10 business days. USPS guidelines state that it can then take up to 10 business days to arrive at its destination.  Express mailing is also available for an additional fee. Please keep the processing time and mailing time in mind when selecting your exam date. All fields must be completed in order for the request to be processed.

Once received, the exam must be taken on the date requested - it is to be out no longer than 7 days. If an issue arises and the exam cannot be taken on the date scheduled, it is the examinee's responsibility to contact IAEE at +1 (972) 687-9224 or by email at cem@iaee.com in order to set up a new exam date. The proctor will be required to return the exam to IAEE per the instructions provided.

Good luck on your upcoming exam!

**Please Note: Those who are interested in graduating at the Expo! Expo! 2010 Awards Ceremony must be complete their Ninth & Final Course AND Course Exam by 30 September 2010 in order to qualify.**
