It is a great pleasure to address you for the first time
as your new Chairman. I am looking forward to the next
two years with several emotions. The biggest one is
enthusiasm to continue the great work of my predecessors
and increase the benefits of belonging to our Chapter.
Looking at the many opportunities to move our chapter
forward, several things stand out.
I will give you my best efforts to keep our education
program the best of any IAEM chapter and to grow our
membership so the maximum number of our industry
colleagues in this area can take advantage of it.
Of course, I cannot do this alone and I have to ask all
of you for help. Shortly we will send out a solicitation
for committee members. Please review the committee lists
and see where you can help. Like any volunteer job, I
can assure you that will get more out of your
participation than you put in.
We have many terrific initiatives that you will hear
about this year. The sponsorship program is more
successful and growing each month. We have scholarship
opportunities and we donate substantial amounts of money
to several area charities. And, I think we have the best
education program of any IAEM chapter.
So, in closing, all our efforts are driven by great
committees and committee chairs. Please join in and see
how much of an impact you can make.
We have a lot ahead of us this year. No matter what the
challenge, we will succeed with the same formula as we
have used for years - hard work and team effort.
Have a great new year and I hope to see you at our next
meeting.

The
Chapter's annual schedule of monthly meetings picks up
again on Tuesday, February 11th at the Hotel
Pennsylvania.
The day's program kicks off with an educational program

- TERRORISM RISK INSURANCE ACT OF 2002
|
| |
By
Jack M. Buttine, John Buttine, Inc.
The Terrorism Risk Insurance Act of 2002 (the Act) is
intended to create a temporary federal program to insure
losses from acts of terrorism. It has not had the effect
on the exhibition industry for which many of us may have
hoped.
In the exhibition industry, one of our most important
types of insurance is the Cancellation of Event
insurance policy. Following the events of Sept 11, 2001,
Cancellation of Event polices began to have exclusions
for loss due to terrorism. Despite the language of the
Act, the terrorism exclusion still exists in
Cancellation of Event insurance.
Here is how it works. The Act voids existing terrorism
exclusions and spells out the procedure for reinstating
them. All commercial insurance policies - including
Cancellation of Event insurance - must offer terrorism
coverage. Insurers must give you 30 days to react to
their offer of terrorism coverage. Since the cost is
very high, most show managers reject the offer and the
terrorism exclusion is then reinstated. The cost of
terrorism coverage has been as high as several times the
cost of the coverage without terrorism.
Although the press may have indicated that the
government would assume the risk of terrorism, one of
the problems is that only "certified" acts
trigger the Act. A certified terrorist act must result
in over $5 million damages. Fear or reluctance to attend
an event would not qualify.
One of the reasons for the huge cost of the terrorism
coverage is insurers have to pay all losses until the
cost exceeds 7% to 15% of their premium income. For
large insurers, that can be a very great cost before any
government reimbursement is made.
So, the Act is a start. Hopefully, the strength of the
coverage will improve so that Cancellation of Event
insurance once again offers true coverage against
terrorism loss.

The
Chapter's Education Committee has been busy planning our
future educational meetings. On tap for the rest of this
year are "A Look into the Future,"
"Unique Marketing and Promotional Ideas,"
"Behind the Scenes Tour of the Port of
Newark," and a session on Sales. Announcements on
each of these will be sent to all Chapter members
several weeks in advance; when they appear in your
inbox, don't hesitate to RSVP! Remember, each session is
followed by a networking reception and luncheon - what
better way to catch up with colleagues and meet new
friends?
Did you know that our Chapter has a Sponsorship
Committee? This committee is responsible for recruiting
sponsors for our programs and events, and thereby
helping to support the Chapter's activities through
their financial or in-kind contributions. Tony Hodgins
of Freeman Decorating assumed responsibility for heading
these efforts during the past year, and he has done a
terrific job in lining up sponsors and building interest
in this effort. You can see the logos of our current
Chapter sponsors in the margin of this newsletter. If
you or your company is interested in joining our
sponsorship program, please contact Tony at hodgit@totalshow.com
for more information.
