The end of fall is certainly time for the Big Push. It
seems that year-end sales goals, education credits,
shopping, next year's budget and holiday parties all
come together at the same time.
Squeezing it all it is difficult. But, we should
remember to keep the first things first and to begin
with the end in mind as suggested in the book Seven
Habits of Highly Effective People. One of the best
ways to begin with the end in mind is to learn as much
as possible about our business. Our Chapter's education
and networking programs are great opportunities for
learning.
November's Sales topic will be terrific. December's
holiday party draws the biggest crowd of the year and
raises our largest amount of money - and is a lot of
fun. I recommend that you save the November 11 and
December 17 dates.
To our members who made time to attend the We Love New
York Day on October 18, a big thanks. The stories of
what you did are real examples of what tradeshow folks
can do when we get together.
I'll see you at our next meeting. Good Luck squeezing it
all in!

- IAEM Cares for New York | New York Cares Day
2003
|
| |
By
Nancy V. Buttine, John Buttine Inc.
Every October, New
York Cares and the New
York City Department of Education mobilize thousands
of volunteers throughout the city of New York for an
incredible day at some of the city's most challenged
public schools and parks. Volunteers paint murals,
schoolyards and hallways. Others revitalize gardens,
libraries, and classrooms.
Saturday October 18, fifteen members of our IAEM Team
and their friends volunteered at PS
133, a public elementary school in New York City, as
part of the 12th Annual New York Cares Day.
At the beginning of the day, Vice Principal Natasha
McGregor gave us a clear picture of the school's
mission. Hearing her passion and sense of humor
convinced us all that the City got it right when it
assigned her to this school. The work we did was greatly
appreciated as she told us how excited the children are
to come in to school on Monday morning and see all the
changes! That excitement was clear when we noticed some
currently attending students had taken their Saturday to
enthusiastically help us out. They were very excited to
take part in something that will have a lasting impact
on their school.
Our team participated in numerous major projects
throughout the school from painting murals in the
administrative offices to gardening, painting outdoor
fences, decorating the doors and reorganizing the
library. Atessa Lemaire, Buttine Insurance led the team
that designed the murals - they were bright, colorful
and represented an emphasis on reading, as requested by
the Vice Principal. Some of the team also painted
"Author Chairs" - special chairs for the
students to read aloud to their class.
The day ended with a great sense of accomplishment and
pride.
Next October we will do it again. Keep an eye out for
the date. We guarantee you will have a great time!

Sales Workshop
Were you one of the lucky attendees at the PDC who
learned a lot at one of the many educational sessions?
Well, now is your chance to learn more or maybe just
brush up on some skills, specifically sales.
On Tuesday November 11th at New
York's Hotel Pennsylvania you have an opportunity to
workshop with two experts in sales: Dan Cole and Eric
Udler. Here is a sample of what you might hear:

Dan Cole, Vice President of Sales and Development,
Consumer Electronics Association
Every time you give a sales presentation, think of it as
the first time. Be careful not to fall into a routine.
This is the only time your prospect is going to hear
your presentation. Before you make a call, think about
what you can do to make the presentation unique for that
prospect. What questions could you ask about their
product, and be ready with a list of reasons about why
your show is the best fit for their company.

Eric Udler, CEM, President of FSI Inc.
Selling is a relationship-based process. If your sales
pitch sounds scripted or artificial, it will be
difficult to build that relationship. Instead, think of
the selling process as your chance to tell your event's
story. Develop a narrative with a beginning, middle and
end. Work in important facts and benefits into this
narrative. Telling a story will make your pitch flow
more naturally.
HOLIDAY PARTY
Is this the article you've been checking your inbox
every 5 minutes for? We at EXPO-SAY have been
receiving calls, emails, faxes, snail mail and even
smoke signals with questions pertaining to the Annual
Holiday Party. Apparently people have all sorts of
information.
Well, here is the official word:
The party will be held on Wednesday, December 17th. The New
York Marriott Marquis is once again hosting the
event.
Not only is this event a spectacularly good time but
keep in mind, it is a very important fund raising event.
In 1995 the membership of NYIAEM adopted an annual
tradition whose sole purpose was to make a difference in
the lives of those New Yorkers who are the most
vulnerable and most deserving: our kids. NYIAEM supports
the grass roots effort of the Fresh
Air Fund, an organization that helps inner city kids
experience fresh air, the great outdoors and the joys of
summer. With your help, NYIAEM has raised over $85,000,
which has helped build the Fresh Air Fund's Nurses'
hospital and has sent many needy kids to summer camp.
Over the past eight years, generous prize donations from
NYIAEM members have allowed us to raise money through
raffles and silent auctions. This year we are hoping to
start a new tradition that makes it easier for members
to become prize sponsors. Instead of contributing actual
prizes, we are asking members to consider cash donations
towards the Annual Holiday Party prize fund. The funds
collected will be used to make the prize drawings fresh
and exciting while maximizing the NYIAEM contribution to
the Fresh Air Fund.
Your company may participate as a corporate sponsor
and/or you may contribute as an individual sponsor.
Sponsors contributing funds will be mentioned wherever
possible, including signage at the party and in the
post- event issue of EXPO-SAY. Remember, the more funds
we receive, the more exciting the raffle prizes and the
more money we can donate to the Fresh
Air Fund.
Our goal has not changed, nor will the fun and prizes
that you've come to expect. As always, all proceeds from
the raffle will be donated to the Fresh
Air Fund.
It is beyond comprehension that many New York children
have never known the simple joy of "fresh
air". Let our long tradition of giving to this most
worthy organization be a beacon that will shine forth
the entire Holiday Season.
To contribute the prize fund, please request a donation

- LEND US YOUR TALENTS -- VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
|
| |
Our
Chapter needs more talented volunteers to help us create
a stronger Chapter. We rely on the contributions and
dedication of our industry's professionals to lend their
expertise and knowledge.
Our committees make it all happen. Every program you
attend, every service you use from NY-IAEM, is provided
by volunteers.
As a member of a committee, you will not be asked to
"do it all alone." Committee members share
responsibilities, and often enjoy themselves while doing
so. Our Chapter has seven committees that keep things
going for all the members. Why not commit a few hours to
a committee that matches your skills or interests?
The committees are Awards, Education, Special Events,
Host, Membership, Newsletter and Public Relations.
Please contact Tony Lee at 914-421-3222 or tony_lee@glmshows.com for additional information. Don't let
another day go by without contributing your talent to
our Chapter.

IAEM
ANNOUNCES QUICKRENEW - ONLINE DUES RENEWAL PROGRAM FOR
MEMBERS
Membership experience enhanced with easy, online
transaction process
DALLAS - 25 September 2003 - The International
Association for Exhibition Management (IAEM) announces
today that it has launched QuickRenew - an automated,
online dues renewal program for its members. Quick Renew
was designed with members' needs in mind since many
depend on quick and efficient electronic means to stay
connected to their professional organizations today.
IAEM worked with ExpoExchange in developing and testing
the new program to bring this enhanced service to
members.
IAEM President, Steven Hacker, CAE, said "We are
pleased to offer this new service to our members. We
hope that QuickRenew will enhance our members'
experience with IAEM, and will be used as the primary
means of renewing membership."
QuickRenew allows for existing IAEM members - both show
organizers and industry suppliers- - who have
individually-held memberships, to renew their annual
dues online by updating their personal information and
completing the transaction with a credit card over a
secure platform. QuickRenew eliminates time and hassles
for members who previously had limited options of
renewing membership. QuickRenew saves time for members
who are renewing their dues while out of the office on
show site.
