Chairman’s Corner
Times are exciting in the
tradeshow industry in New York. We have the Javits Center expansion nearly
underway. New Board members will join the NY Area Chapter of IAEM Board. And,
we may soon see consolidation in the number of industry associations.
The Javits Center expansion is
getting closer. There is focus taking place. It is exciting to see the process
unfold and even more exciting to see that our industry is playing an active
role in the planning process for the expansion.
At this time of year, new boards
of directors are chosen. While a few of the folks on the board will change, the
character of the committed volunteers who serve you is unchanged.
We have a constant need for
committee members: “We Need You” to paraphrase the famous poster. There are
many committees to join. All are important. Please consider volunteering. You
will certainly get more out of your effort than you put in. And, it is fun.
For years, there has been talk of
consolidating some of the many industry associations. We are getting close.
Later on we will discuss some exciting work the National Chapter leaders are
doing in this important area.
Please come to our educational
sessions – they are first rate and the product of a lot of work. If you do not
agree that they are terrific, call me.
Best wishes for a profitable 4th
Quarter.

October Luncheon Generates Praise from
Bloomberg
IAEM Board Chairman -- Chris Brown, Senior Vice
President, Convention and Expositions, National Association of Broadcasters
(NAB) -- provided an overview and update on IAEM’s strategic plan on October 11 at
NYIAEM’s October Luncheon at New York's Hotel Pennsylvania. With the theme “IAEM and Industry
Insight,” the luncheon discussed trends that will shape the future
of our industry and addressed industry consolidation, advocacy, the need for
unified industry promotion, news, and education.
During lunch, the Chapter
presented its annual report, this year’s awards, and voted in the new Board
of Directors for 2006:

Praise from Mayor Bloomberg
NYIAEM announced that Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg
received the highest award our chapter has to offer, the King's Glove Award, at
our meeting October 11. The award, for outstanding achievements and
contributions made by an individual toward the betterment of the exhibition
industry in the New York area, was met with a strong acknowledgement of support
for our association and our industry in a letter:
http://www.iaem.org/content/aboutiaem/chapters/newyork/mayor_letter.pdf. Mark Ricks, Senior Policy Director for Deputy Mayor Dan
Doctoroff, received the award for the mayor.
The Board of the NY area chapter
of IAEM awarded Mayor Bloomberg the King’s Glove Award for his leadership and
vision as the driving force of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center expansion.
Mayor Bloomberg’s unwavering support proves that attraction of meetings,
events, trade shows, and public shows are among his administration’s top
priorities.
This much-needed expansion will propel New York City into
the front ranks of the exposition industry. Jumping from the 18th to
the 5th largest convention center signals that we are now
competitors for the top tier of meetings, conventions and shows.
Together we will bring more business, more visitor spending
and more jobs to new york city
Diamond
Service Awards
The chapter also presented three Diamond Service
awards to those members who have distinguished themselves over a
period of time by dedicated service to the NY area chapter of IAEM.
The first recipient was Maria Wilcox, Director of Hotel
Relations for NYC & Company and outgoing NYIAEM Board member. Maria’s tireless efforts in assisting
on a variety of projects, including the first-ever IAEM professional
development conference in New York City, and her wide range of experience in
the meetings and convention industry gave her an uncommon perspective and made
her a valued colleague; we will miss her.
The second Diamond Service Award was presented to Laura
Greene, a former board member whose devotion was demonstrated in the time and
energy she gave to her board responsibilities, most significantly to editing
the chapter newsletter. In addition, Laura’s knowledge of the operation of
major tradeshows is second to none and her considered advice and input was
always much appreciated.
The next award was made to Nancy Buttine, a tireless and
enthusiastic volunteer and key member of the Special Events Committee. For
years, she has been an active participant in planning and assembling prizes for
the holiday party, key efforts that have been important to our events’ success.
In addition, she regularly assumes other responsibilities and her great can-do
attitude is an inspiration to the chapter. Her leadership in performing
numerous special tasks makes her a valued member of our chapter.
Holiday Party 2005:
A Decade of Dedication
Every year, NYIAEM welcomes the holiday season with an
amazing and well attended Holiday Party hosted by the New York Marriott
Marquis. This year promises to be even better. Be sure to save the date:
Monday, December 19.
If you’ve attended in the past, you know this annual party is the chapter’s
main fundraising event. You may be surprised to learn however, that 2005 marks
the 10th anniversary of our relationship with a very special, home-grown
organization called The Fresh Air Fund.
Ten years ago our chapter focused its financial clout, and chose to support a
local charity, rather than a nationally based charity. We chose a wonderful
organization called the Fresh Air Fund and since 1995, we have seen first hand
how our yearly donations are making a difference in the lives of thousands of
New York City children. As we reflect upon our decade of giving, we can take
pride in knowing that when our membership unites, great things happen.
To date, NYIAEM has donated more than $100,000 dollars to the Fresh Air Fund,
allowing this local charity to build and maintain the Fresh Air Fund’s Nurses’
hospital. We have increased awareness of the real needs of the underprivileged
boys and girls in our own backyard.
We certainly have great things to look back on as well as great things ahead.
In fact, this year’s Holiday Party promises to be the very best ever with
tremendous prizes and a streamlined program that will maximize the holiday
spirit and commitment to this charity.
We urge all our members to
mark this ten year milestone by attending the 2005 Holiday Party as an
individual, or as part of an office group. Let’s break attendance records in
2005, and make our decade of giving extra special by increasing this year’s
donation to the Fresh Air Fund, and showcasing the chapter’s ability to make a
real difference. For more information

See you on the 19th.
To be included in the
Holiday Party Program, all donations and sponsorships must be received by
December 1.

NYIAEM Donates $5,000 to
Hurricane Relief
In response to the distress on the
Gulf Coast following hurricane Katrina, IAEM’s New York chapter donated $5,000
to the American Red Cross that will help relieve suffering and assist victims
in rebuilding their lives.
Annual Summer Outing Sailed
to Success
Approximately 100 members attended
June’s Annual Summer Outing on Bateaux New York, which offered networking, good
food, great views, raffle prizes, and a chance to relax and enjoy the summer
weather, which I’m sure we all miss right about now.
Metropolitan Exposition Services, the sole event
sponsor for the 3rd continuous year, raffled off an iPod Mini and
the event also had the largest 50-50 raffle, sponsored by IAEM, ever. As
always, the outing raised money for the Fresh Air Fund, this year with a
donation of $4,595. Representatives of the
charity were there to gratefully accept the donation, which came from
individual chapter members and onboard raffle ticket sales. Those at the event
also got to witness the unveiling of a new superhero, Metro Expo Man.
NYIAEM extends its thanks and gratitude to Metropolitan
Exposition Services: www.metro-expo.com
for their support and this opportunity for the chapter to network and enjoy an
afternoon on the water at this annual summer event that all look forward to.
Board Spotlight
www.iaem.org/content/aboutiaem/chapters/newyork/memberphotos/Phil_Hobson.jpg
NYIAEM will spotlight one member of the
chapter’s Board of Directors at a time to introduce him or her to members and
to raise awareness of the opportunities possible to contribute to this
chapter’s success. This month’s spotlight is on Treasurer
Phil Hobson, who is also President of Phoenix International Business
Logistics Inc.:

Hobson has been a member of NYIAEM since 1993,
has served on various committees, been a member of the board of directors, and
recently became an officer.
In his role as Treasurer he balance the
chapter’s books, monitors revenues and expenses, and prepares tax returns. But
wait, that’s not all. As an active NYIAEM member, Hobson also implements the
Cvent event management program NYIAEM uses and is also chairman
of the chapter’s Holiday Committee, which arranges our Holiday Party and Summer
Outing.
When he’s not writing checks,
counting RSVPs, or confirming an event sponsor for NYIAEM, Hobson is a licensed
customs broker working with an international trade show logistics company
currently celebrating its 10th anniversary. Phoenix is a fully licensed
international freight forwarder and U.S. customhouse broker specializing in
shipping and onsite logistics for domestic and international trade shows,
corporate meetings, and other special events. As one of the few trade show
freight forwarders with a customs license, Phoenix organizes onsite logistics
in addition to processing the customs clearances and export
documentation. This dual qualification is supported by global resources
that include offices, partnerships, and agency agreements throughout the world.
Hobson loves that the industry feels small
(“Like working with family”) and is made even smaller and more familiar by the
contacts he makes by being an active member of NYIAEM.
See the below story on volunteering to see how
YOU can put your talents and expertise to work – and have fun and make great
contacts – by becoming a more active NYIAEM member.
We Want YOU!
NYIAEM relies on the talents and dedication of industry professionals
like you to lend their experience and knowledge to our committees, insuring the
success of our programs and activities.
Volunteering offers a chance to contribute your talents and
make your mark, great networking and publicity opportunities, and the warm,
fuzzy feeling that comes from knowing your valuable time and energy is
appreciated and very much needed.
Ever think that you could do something better? Had an idea
but never relayed it? Now’s your chance to join a committee to help plan and execute
social events, awards, educational programs, and so much more.
Every program you attend, every service you use
from NYIAEM, is provided by volunteers.
Our chapter has seven committees that keep things going for all the members.
Why not commit a few hours to a committee that matches your skills or
interests? The committees are Awards, Education, Special Events, Host,
Membership, Newsletter, and Public Relations. Don't let another day go by
without contributing your talent to our chapter.
