The change of seasons always brings new and exciting
opportunities.
This month your chapter kicks off the fall season with a
pretty full schedule; the first-ever Professional
Development Conference - the PDC, the Chapter's 30th
Birthday Party September 9th in Grand Central Terminal,
our annual meeting in October, and much more.
Invest in Yourself is a saying that is as true in our
business as in any other. The seminar schedule at the
PDC has a wide array of topics that will help any of us
to become more professional.
The 30th Anniversary Party at Metrazur in Grand
Central will be lots of fun. Based on the planning we
have done so far, I guarantee it! We even have a
special cake for the occasion.
You may notice a new feel to the newsletter. We have
a new editor starting this issue. Laura Greene has
handed her responsibilities to Larry Grossenbacher of
Metropolitan Exposition Services, Inc. We all owe Laura
a big thank-you for her stewardship of our newsletter
during the past two years.
I hope you all have had a great summer. I am looking
forward to our fall season and our Chapter's next 30
years.
See you at the PDC!

- NYIAEM Covers The Waterfront
| | | By Donna Venito, Independent Show Management
Services
Something very special happened one sunny morning
for a group of NYIAEM members and guests.
On May
20th, this group of industry professionals boarded an
Academy bus at the Hotel Pennsylvania and ventured
to Port Newark/Elizabeth for a private tour of how
international shipments are processed through the port
and the US Customs office. Board member Phil Hobson
led this exclusive tour, made possible by Phoenix
International Business Logistics and the NYIAEM
Education Committee.
Upon arrival at the Port of Newark/Elizabeth, a
knowledgeable and friendly Port Terminal Operator, who
provided an up close and personal tour of sea freight
containers as they were processed, greeted the group.
Port management graciously granted special permission
for the bus to pull alongside a vessel as PNCT
dockworkers were unloading, and permitted attendees
to leave the bus for a closer look and photo taking.
The tour continued with a private visit to the PNCT
Command Center. Attendees witnessed first hand how
operators monitor the receipt and release of over a
thousand containers per day, through the use of a
complex series of video monitors and computers. As the
tour of the port ended, attendees realized they had
absorbed a dictionary's worth of new acronyms and
terms to describe the various activities in the process.
Then it was off to the next stop on the tour, a visit to
the U.S. Customs Entry processing office, where Phil
Hobson provided an explanation of how shipment
entries are processed and cleared. The tour concluded
with a delicious lunch and a tour of the Meadowlands
Convention Center.
Special thanks are due to Academy Bus Lines,
Meadowlands Convention Center, PNCT, Phoenix
International Business Logistics, Inc., and the Hotel
Pennsylvania, who helped make this special day
possible.

IAEM PDC
By now you are all aware that the first IAEM PDC will be
held right here in our own back yard. If you somehow
missed the dates, here is another chance to jot it
down. September 8 - 10 at the Grand Hyatt. There
will be a plethora of sessions for you to attend
pertaining to a wide variety of aspects in our industry.
Not to mention a few social gatherings for you to
mingle with your peers.
New York Cares Day
We all know that NYIAEM members care every day but
Saturday October 18th is officially New York Cares Day.
New York Cares Day is a day of volunteer service to
beautify our city's schools and a fundraiser to benefit
New York Cares' year round programs.
In partnership with the New York City Department of
Education, New York Cares mobilizes thousands of
volunteers to paint murals, line games, fences, and
classrooms; reorganize libraries; clean up playgrounds
and gardens; and do so much more!
Volunteer with us on New York Cares Day and collect
pledges from your friends and family to support New
York Cares and the programs we provide to New York
City every day of the year.

- NYIAEM BOAT OUTING RETURNS!
| | | All Aboard
By Larry Grossenbacher, Metropolitan Exposition
Services, Inc.
On Tuesday June 17th The Celestial set sail for a
NYIAEM luncheon. For you land-lovers who missed out,
the food was good, the weather was great, the sights
were amazing and the company topped all three. For a
brief time we were all able to leave the hectic pace of
our industry behind and enjoy ourselves.
In addition to handing out clever crossword puzzles and
handy sunscreen to all attendees, Metropolitan
Exposition Services provided sponsorship for the event.
Above you see them all receiving the latest in IAEM
sportswear as thanks.
Several raffles were drawn and winners walked away
with everything from tickets to various events to good
clean money while breathing in the fresh air.
Speaking of money and fresh air, NYIAEM had a classic
moment making an $11,000 contribution to The Fresh
Air Fund. Here you see members of the board making
the presentation:

If you were unable to attend, take a look at some of
the faces who were there and plan on being there next
year! If you did attend, take a look at some of the
new contacts you may have made and why not give
them a call and make arrangements to meet up at
Metrazur on Tuesday September 10th for NYIAEM's
30th anniversary celebration! And watch out for the
EXPO-SAY photographer, you might wind up on the
next issues "wall of fame".

- LEND US YOUR TALENTS -- VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
| | | Our Chapter needs more talented volunteers to help us
create a stronger Chapter. We rely on the
contributions and dedication of our industry's
professionals to lend their expertise and
knowledge.
Our committees make it all happen. Every program you
attend, every service you use from NY-IAEM, is
provided by volunteers.
As a member of a committee, you will not be asked
to "do it all alone." Committee members share
responsibilities, and often enjoy themselves while doing
so. Our Chapter has seven committees that keep
things going for all the members. Why not commit a
few hours to a committee that matches your skills or
interests?
The committees are Awards, Education, Special Events,
Host, Membership, Newsletter and Public
Relations.
Please contact Tony Lee at 914-421-3222 or tony_lee@glmshows.com for additional information. Don't let
another day go by without contributing your
talent to our Chapter.

EXPO-SAY's editorial and production team has changed.
Many thanks to Laura Greene and Sherri
Gordon for doing such an excellent job for so long!
They have passed the torch to Larry Grossenbacher
who will be looking for writers to report on industry
news and IAEM functions and photographers to send
pictures of these events. Sorry, press plates do not
come with the job, just gratitude. If you have any
questions, comments, suggestions or complaints, feel
free to email Larry at
lgrossenbacher@metropolitanexposition.com.
