Future Leaders Institute Mentor Program The word mentor is derived from Greek mythology. It was Mentor, a friend of Odysseus who assumed responsibility for the care of Odysseus' son during Odysseus' absence from Athens during the Trojan War. Thus today a mentor is one who serves as a trusted advisor, friend or teacher. It is almost always someone with more experience and often one who possesses special skills. Organizations sometimes will establish mentoring programs in which rookies are paired with a more experienced partner. FUTURE LEADERS INSTITUTE: Each year, IAEE hosts a three-day Future Leaders Institute. Attendance is limited and each participant must go through a thorough nomination and approval process. This year the program is scheduled 10-13 August 2008 at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa in Lost Pines (Austin), Texas. To enrich this learning experience, each candidate participating in the program is assigned a Mentor. DUTIES: The Future Leaders Institute Mentor ("Mentor") will help direct a Future Leader candidate ("Mentee") along a career-long path of learning and skills development. The Mentor will become a friend, role model, and counselor and will share the lessons of experience and good judgment. - A commitment to a bi-monthly phone call with assigned Mentee from August 2008 through January 2009. Mentors and Mentees may decide at the end of this six month period to continue with the Mentor/Mentee relationship.
- At the conclusion of the Future Leaders Institute, Mentees receive a post-event assignment and will present their findings during an alumni event at Expo! Expo! Mentors are requested to provide guidance and review their Mentee's post event assignment. Mentors will receive information regarding the assignment in advance to assist in answering questions and providing guidance to the Mentee.
- It is not a requirement that Mentors attend the Future Leadership Institute.
BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS: A passion for the exhibition and events industry coupled with a commitment to help build future leaders is the essential background ingredient. While it will be very helpful for Mentors to have been Future Leaders Institute Alumni themselves, this is not a requirement. By definition, mentors should be individuals who have accrued substantial business experience and it will be especially helpful if much of that experience has taken place within the exhibition and events industry. Please note: Mentors do not need to attend the institute. Apply Now! |
