Learn More about becoming a Mentee

IAEE's Mentor Match program is designed to match emerging leaders within the exhibitions and events industry with seasoned professionals in hopes that the two will learn from one another and enjoy a stronger, more fruitful professional experience.

Frequently Asked Questions for Mentees:

What are the requirements for becoming a mentee?
The only requirement is that you are an IAEE member in good standing.

What is the time commitment?
Ultimately, this will be decided by you and your mentor. Ideally, mentees should plan to communicate with their mentors at least one time per month. The formal IAEE mentor-mentee relationship can last one year or as long as the mentor and mentee wish to continue.

What is my role as a mentee? What should I be prepared to discuss with my mentor?
IAEE mentors can be valuable resources to emerging industry professionals. As a mentee, you are encouraged to establish a strong relationship with your mentor and learn from his or her professional experiences. Feel free to ask lots of questions. For instance, you may want to learn about career paths within the exhibition and events industry, the value of networking, how to make the most of your membership in professional associations, mistakes to avoid or industry trends. Or, you may want to have your mentor review your resume and cover letter.

Find out the best way and time to get in touch with your mentor and stay in contact with your mentor regularly. If, for any reason, you are unable to continue the relationship, please let your mentor know and contact Tan Ward. Be sure to thank your mentor. Keep in mind, your mentor is volunteering his or her time!

How will I be expected to communicate with my mentor?
This will depend on the communication style preferred by both you and your mentor. For instance, if you both prefer to communicate via email, go for it! If you live in close vicinity with your mentor and would like to schedule a face-to-face meeting, this is acceptable. Whichever communication method you choose, be sure that it is mutually compatible.

Balancing work, school, social experiences and relationships can be challenging. Remember to be respectful of your mentor's time. If you need to reschedule a meeting for any reason, be sure to communicate this to your mentor within a timely manner. You should expect the same treatment by your mentor!
