The meeting in Boston is wrapped up. In addition to addressing key advocacy issues like travel promotion support for international travel to the U.S., expansion of the visa waiver program (Korea is the latest nation included in the program, Los Angeles CVB CEO Mark Lieberman reports visitors from Korea has risen 26% in the first three months!), and managing the US visa issuance challenges, a bold new proposal is being field-tested. Thanks are due to Chuck Schwartz, CEM, who last week discovered that the software program driving our online membership directory was not including CEM designations. The glitch has been fixed. And also to Yulita Osuba who caught my mental mangling of the URL address of The International Center for Exhibitor and Event Marketing. It is, of course, www.iceem.net . An international and awe-inspiring group --- this week I reviewed the applications for scholarship assistance that are now in the hands of the Exhibition Industry Foundation’s Helen Brett Scholarship Committee. The stories contained in the applications are truly inspiring and come to us from young people studying event and exhibition management at universities in Malaysia, Canada, Egypt and several states in the US. Most are running close to 4.0 grade point averages. One applicant with...

President Barack Obama wants federal workers to cut down on business travel… as he seeks to reduce heat-trapping emissions produced by the federal government. First industry response: "Discouraging business travel is short-sighted and counterproductive," said Roger Dow, president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association. "This type of arbitrary and across-the-board approach will further economic decline at precisely the wrong time for the more than two million Americans...

An important element of IAEE’s strategic plan is to assist members who wish to expand their operations internationally. This is why we have scheduled a Trade Mission to Singapore 9-12 March 2011 and will soon announce another mission to Dubai 16-22 September 2011. Both programs offer qualified event organizers the opportunity to visit the sites; learn about business opportunities; meet with potential partners and government officials. Look for enrollment details for both programs...

In-House Exhibition Hall Exclusives Policy Statement Under Review
July 16, 2010

When IAEE’s Board of Directors meets next on August 27-28 an issue of discussion and possible action will be to review the association’s long-standing policy statement that addresses in-house exclusive services. Declining state and municipal budgets in recent years have caused some facilities to consider taking certain support services in-house as exclusives. Others are adding additional costs to services provided by outside contractors flagging revenues --- unfortunately, at the...
