My CEM Expanded My International Exhibition Career

CEM Spotlight on Victoria Plotnikova
Victoria Plotnikova had already worked in exhibitions on two continents and from three different seats at the table, but earning her CEM gave her something her résumé could not: a shared framework for making sense of it all. Now she brings that sharper lens and fresh confidence into every client conversation and business decision. Find out why she sees certification as an investment in yourself rather than just another credential.

By Victoria Plotnikova, MBA, CEM | Regional Sales Executive – Southeast | Aluvision USA

The exhibitions and events industry has been more than a career for me. It has been a journey across countries, cultures and different sides of a business that continues to inspire me. Throughout my professional journey in Europe and the United States, I have had the opportunity to experience the exhibition industry from three distinct perspectives: event organizer, general contractor and exhibition solutions provider. Each role has shaped the way I understand our industry, build relationships and approach business challenges. Earning my CEM designation brought these experiences together and expanded my perspective as an industry professional.

My career began on the event organizer side, where I developed a strong appreciation for everything that goes into creating a successful exhibition. From understanding exhibitors’ expectations to managing relationships and supporting event growth, I learned that exhibitions are about much more than bringing companies together under one roof. Later, working with a general contractor gave me an entirely different perspective. I experienced the operational complexity behind the scenes, the importance of collaboration, and the challenges of turning creative concepts into successful exhibitions. Today, as Regional Sales Executive for the Southeast at Aluvision USA, I work with exhibit houses, general contractors, event organizers and experiential agencies, helping them explore innovative exhibition solutions.

Having worked across these three areas has taught me something valuable: every stakeholder sees an exhibition through a different lens, but ultimately, we all contribute to the same goal, creating meaningful experiences that bring people and businesses together.

Why CEM Matters to Me

Although I already had extensive international industry experience when I pursued my CEM designation, I believe professional growth should never stop. For me, earning my CEM was not simply about adding another credential to my name. It was an opportunity to strengthen my knowledge, challenge my perspective and connect my practical experience with the professional standards of the exhibition industry. The certification reinforced the importance of strategic planning, financial understanding, operational excellence, and delivering measurable value to exhibitors and stakeholders. It also reminded me that experience and education are most powerful when they complement each other.

Connecting International Experience with Professional Excellence

Working in both Europe and the United States has shown me how differently exhibitions can operate across markets. Business cultures, expectations, communication styles and exhibition practices may vary, but the fundamentals of successful events remain remarkably consistent: strong relationships, attention to detail, creative thinking, and a commitment to delivering value. My CEM education has given me an additional framework for approaching those differences with confidence.

Today, I find myself applying that knowledge in conversations with clients, when evaluating business opportunities, and when helping partners identify solutions that support their long-term growth.

A Commitment to Lifelong Learning

Recently renewing my CEM designation was another meaningful milestone in my professional journey. Our industry never stands still. Technology evolves, customer expectations change and new opportunities constantly emerge. Continuing education allows us to remain relevant, adaptable and prepared for what comes next. I am also pursuing my Certified Trade Show Marketer (CTSM) designation because I believe there is always more to learn, regardless of how many years we have spent in the industry. For anyone considering CEM, my encouragement is simple: view it not only as a certification but as an investment in yourself, your professional confidence and your future.

I am grateful for the opportunities this industry has given me, the people I have met and the relationships I have built across borders.
