How did you start your career in this industry?
Long story short! I’ve always had a passion for working with people, which led me to explore ways to bring them together. During college, I majored in agricultural economics and life sciences, with a minor in event management and meeting planning. While it may seem like an unusual mix, my involvement in organizing international cross-cultural events, music festivals, and sports events sparked a lasting interest in the events world.
My passion for event management never faded, and I eventually pursued a master’s degree specializing in event and sustainable destination management. Since then, I started transitioning from agriculture and life sciences to the exhibitions and events industry. Now, I work for a scientific non-profit in Washington, D.C., operating exhibitions and sponsorship fulfillment globally.
How have you made a difference with your show or with working with a client by applying the knowledge you gained by obtaining your CEM designation?
I am always passionate about incorporating sustainable best practices into exhibitions. I continue working on eco-friendly strategies for our shows, including researching and sourcing sustainable materials for conference bags and lanyards, minimizing single-use plastics on the show floor, and recommending digital solutions to reduce print materials and signage.
What was it that you did or implemented right after obtaining your CEM?
I quickly applied all the knowledge I learned from the CEM Learning Program to improve vendor relations and best practices of show regulations, streamline the operation process, and enhance the overall show experience.
