As I close out my term as IAEE Chairperson, I find myself reflecting on an extraordinary year of transformation, challenge and opportunity for our industry. Looking back at the conversations we’ve had through this column, I’m struck by a powerful realization: 2025 has painted a vivid picture of an industry that is reimagining itself, and those leading this evolution are the ones who will define what trade shows will become in the decades ahead.

When I began this journey in January, I emphasized that we were at a pivotal juncture although I didn’t fully appreciate then just how significant it would prove to be. We’ve witnessed technology accelerate from acting as a supporting tool to becoming central infrastructure for everything we do. We’ve seen workforce dynamics shift dramatically with Peak 65 creating unprecedented knowledge transfer challenges. We’ve confronted ethical questions about data usage, privacy and AI implementation that didn’t exist in their current form just months ago.

These challenges aren’t isolated issues requiring separate solutions. They’re interconnected threads in a larger tapestry that demands integrated thinking. When we discussed engaging next-generation leaders, we weren’t just talking about recruitment strategies – we were acknowledging that Gen Z and Millennial professionals expect technology-enabled, purpose-driven experiences that align with their values around sustainability and social responsibility. When we explored our role as economic architects, we weren’t simply rebranding our industry – we were recognizing that the data and insights we generate create value ecosystems extending far beyond individual shows.

Note that the common denominator across every conversation has been community. Whether championing women’s leadership, advocating on Capitol Hill or recognizing outstanding colleagues, we’ve consistently returned to the understanding that our collective strength lies in lifting each other up. Technology may be transforming how we operate, but human connection remains our industry’s heartbeat.

2025 reinforced that change isn’t something that merely happens, it’s a process we actively shape. The integration of CEIR with IAEE exemplifies this proactive approach. Rather than passively observing industry trends, we’re creating robust intelligence frameworks that allow us to anticipate and lead change. For example, the insights from CEIR Predict serve as strategic tools that enable us to deliberately position ourselves for economic innovation.

This year has also challenged us to embrace the complexity of ethical innovation because we’re not just adopting new technologies, we’re thoughtfully considering how they serve stakeholder needs while protecting individual rights and dignity. This measured approach demonstrates maturity and wisdom that will serve us well as technological capabilities continue advancing at lightning speed.

The advocacy work happening through ECA’s Legislative Action Day reminded us that our voice matters in shaping policies affecting our industry’s future. When we speak with unified purpose, policymakers listen. This collective power extends beyond Washington, D.C.; it influences how we approach workforce development, sustainability frameworks and international collaboration.

As we look toward the future, I’m confident in our industry’s trajectory because of the leaders I’ve talked with throughout this year. You’re the ones asking difficult questions about ethics and inclusion. You’re investing in people development and sustainable practices. You’re embracing digital transformation while maintaining focus on meaningful human connections. You aren’t waiting for the future to arrive – you’re actively building it.

My final challenge to you as we enter 2026 is simple yet profound: continue being architects of possibility. Whether you’re implementing AI-driven matchmaking, developing mentorship programs, creating year-round engagement platforms or advocating for policy changes, remember that every action contributes to the larger ecosystem we’re building together.

I’m deeply honored to have served as the IAEE Chairperson. I’ve truly enjoyed meeting so many fascinating and interesting industry stakeholders throughout my term. Thank you for engaging in meaningful conversations, challenging assumptions, and showing every day that our industry’s greatest strength lies in its people along with the powerful experiences and connections we create together.

Leading the way with passion, grit and kindness has been a personal motto and one I was committed to as I started my term as Chair. I hope the IAEE community saw that in me this past year. Thanks again for letting me be part of something so special.

Here’s to the future we’re building together!
