On-Location Course Information

CEM online courses offer distance learning to CEM candidates who need more flexibility in their schedules along with convenience while completing their CEM designation.  Through Blackboard, IAEE’s learning management system, facilitators and students can interact at a distance without having to be physically present in the same location. All coursework takes place online and is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week, anywhere access to a computer and the Internet is available. All courses but Consumer Show Management are offered at various times throughout the year online.

Blackboard is used to access all of course content, receive assignments, take quizzes and participate in class discussions. Although online courses do not require students to attend class at a specific time or place, they are still required to “attend” class and the classes are not self-paced.

Each online course is divided into four weeks of instruction with each “week” starting on a Tuesday at 12:00am and ending the following Monday at 11:59pm. Each week students will have assigned readings from the course workbook, a graded quiz and graded discussion board exercises. Students can expect to spend 1.5 to 2.0 hours per week on course work.  Online students must be self-disciplined and self-motivated. Every student participating on time is crucial to the success of the course – when discussion board exercises are not completed on time, it affects the entire class.

Important tips for using Blackboard for your online course:

  • Download and install Java, http://www.java.com before the course begins
  • Keep computer virus free and disable “pop-up” windows/blocker
  • Users who access Blackboard from work may experience difficulties because of network security
  • Clear Browser’s cache (internet temporarily files) to free up some computer space.
  • Recommended browsers are Firefox (preferred) or Internet Explorer
  • Blackboard software is located on the Web and does not need to be installed on individual computers. However, to access the course documents from within a Blackboard course, the software used to create the file must be installed on the computer being used. Examples of software that may be required include: Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Adobe Acrobat Reader, QuickTime Viewer, Media Player and Flash Player
